Why Does Skype Say My Browser Is Not Supported? – Technipages

If you use the Skype for Web app in an unsupported browser, you’ll receive the annoying “Browser not supported” alert. “What browsers does Skype support?” you may ask. Well, the list includes only Chrome and Edge. Ideally, you should be running the latest Chrome and Edge versions.

What to Do When Skype Says Your Browser Is Not Supported

If you’re using a different browser such as Firefox, Opera, Brave, and so on, you won’t be able to enjoy the full Skype on the web experience. As stated, web.skype.com only supports Chrome and Edge. Additionally, Skype for Web is not supported on mobile devices and tablets. Even if you manage to log in to your account, you won’t launch or join audio or video meetings.

One quick solution to get rid of this error is to connect to Skype for Web on Chrome or Edge using a laptop or desktop computer.

What About the Firefox Skype Extension?

The bad news is that the Firefox Skype extension is no longer available. This browser extension was actually pretty popular among Firefox users because it allowed them to connect to Skype for Web without any issues.

Unfortunately, with Firefox’s popularity dwindling, the decision to drop support for the Skype Extension was only a matter of time.

A Quick Workaround for Linux Users

If you’re on Linux, there’s a quick workaround that may help you to bypass the “Browser not supported” error on Chrome. It involves changing the User-Agent in the browser settings. Skype may occasionally show you this error, even if you’re using Chrome.

  1. Launch Chrome, and press CTRL+SHIFT+I to launch the Developer tools.
  2. Then click on Network, hit the browser menu (the three dots), and select More tools.
  3. Click on Network Conditions.google chrome network conditions
  4. Set Chrome – Windows or Edge – Windows as your User-Agent.chrome network conditions user agent chrome windows
  5. Apply the changes. Restart Chrome and connect to Skype for Web again.

Learn More About Changing the User-Agent

Several users reported that changing the user agent string in Firefox solved the problem. By doing so, the browser reports to Skype’s servers as Chrome. In a way, Firefox tricks the servers into loading the Skype for the Web application. However, the functionality remains limited. While you can send instant messages, you won’t launch or join video or audio calls.

To change the User-Agent in Firefox, you’ll need the User-Agent Switcher plugin. Install the plugin and click on the User-Agent icon in the upper right-hand corner. Select Chrome and restart your browser.

Conclusion

There are only two browsers that Skype for Web officially supports: Chrome and Edge. If you get the “Browser not supported” error, switch to Chrome or Edge. Alternatively, you can manually edit the User-Agent string to trick Skype’s server into thinking the connection request comes from Chrome.

We hope this guide helped you to work your way around this error. Let us know if the User-Agent trick worked for you.
