The instant messaging app, WhatsApp has officially added and integrates biometric security authentication for login into web and desktop clients. With this feature, Whatsapp users will find the app very secured at all times.
Before now, when you have successfully linked your Whatsapp account to your web browser or desktop app, it automatically continues to log you in at all times, but this is getting more secured with this new feature.
Now, the case has changed, if there is biometric authentication enabled on your phone, you’ll have to unlock the app before you can link your account.
Whatsapp, like other apps, uses the same biometric data APIs to access the on-device security system as an extra measure of authentication before it allows users to connect their accounts.
Whatsapp also said that the new system ensures that should someone else gain access to your phone, they won’t be able to link your account to their web browser. As usual, linking Whatsapp to any Web browser allows the display of sent/received messages).
Fortunately, Whatsapp made the biometric authentication very simple for web browser and desktops, before authorizing the web/desktop client session from your primary device, the app on the phone will prompt you with a biometric authentication request, face unlock included. Only after you’ve identified yourself, the QR code scanner will now appear on the screen.
Today we’re starting to roll out a new security feature for WhatsApp Web and Desktop: face and fingerprint unlock when linking devices.
WhatsApp does not see your face or fingerprint data.

This adds another level of security to your Whatsapp account by requiring biometric authorization when signing into a web or desktop client. To make it work perfectly, you have to link your accounts and won’t work when you disable biometric authentication for their entire device.
However, users who have disabled or switch-off or don’t have a biometric authentication setup on their phone will be able to link their account as usual, but this time around, there is no biometric authentication.
It is enabled by default on any iPhone devices running iOS 14 with either Touch ID or Face ID, and any Android devices that have biometric authentication enabled. This new security feature is now available on both Android OS and iOS devices.
