The criticism that WhatsApp has levied that since Apple’s own messaging service iMessage comes preinstalled and does not have to go through the App Store, it does not have to jump through the same loops as other messaging services will have to. Since WhatsApp’s parent company Facebook has been suffering a lot of lawsuits alleging that it takes part in anti competitive practices, this example of a potential anti competitive practice from Apple could hurt the tech giant without a shadow of a doubt because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up casting aspersions on the motivation behind Apple’s taking up of the user privacy cause.
These labels are really important if users want to feel safe using the various apps that are out there, but at the same time it’s fair to criticize Apple for not holding its own products and services up to the same level of scrutiny. Google has been accused of bias as well, and major tech companies are facing quite a serious problem here in terms of prioritizing their own products over those that competitors are making.
