Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 888 5G SoC with upgraded features

The chipmaker, Qualcomm announces its next-generation processor, the Snapdragon 888 5G Mobile Platform at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit 2020 digital event. It is the company’s latest flagship 5G Mobile Platform.

Qualcomm says its new Snapdragon 888 5G processor will be powering almost every major 2021 Android flagship with faster speeds, better cameras, more powerful AI, and more.

The Snapdragon 888 5G chipset will feature Qualcomm’s new Kryo 680 CPU, which will be one of the first devices to feature Arm’s latest customized Cortex-X1 core and promises up to 25 percent higher performance than last year’s chip with a maximum clock speed of 2.84GHz.

In addition to the power, the new chipset will come with support for the new Adreno 660 GPU which promises a 35 percent jump on graphics rendering. Qualcomm says it is the biggest performance leap for its GPUs yet.

Comparing the new CPU and GPU to the ones on the Snapdragon 875 processor, Qualcomm says they are also more power-efficient with a 25 percent improvement for the Kyro 680 and a 20 percent improvement on the Adreno 660.

One of the major differences between the last year’s Snapdragon 865 and the new Snapdragon 888 is that the 5G modem has been successfully integrated into the SoC directly.

It is combined with a 3rd generation Qualcomm Snapdragon X60 5G modem that was introduced around February, which enables global compatibility by offering mmWave and sub-6 across all major bands worldwide, as well as support for 5G carrier aggregation, global multi-SIM, stand-alone, non-standalone, and Dynamic Spectrum Sharing.

Snapdragon 888 5G Mobile Platform

There is the support for 6th generation Qualcomm AI Engine, with a re-engineered Qualcomm Hexagon processor, which offers 26 tera operations per second (TOPS) AI performance. The 3rd generation of Snapdragon Elite Gaming in Snapdragon 888 delivers Qualcomm Technologies’ most significant upgrade in Qualcomm Adreno GPU performance.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 comes with a second-generation Qualcomm Sensing Hub, it is a dedicated low-power AI processor for smaller hardware-based tasks, which kinda identify when you raise your phone to light up the display. The new second-gen Sensing Hub is dramatically improved, which means the phone will be able to rely less on the main Hexagon processor for those tasks.

Camera improvements on the new processor still remain the ideal idea, the new Spectra 580 ISP is the first from Qualcomm to feature a triple ISP, which allows it to capture three simultaneous 4K HDR video streams or three 28-megapixel photos at once at up to 2.7 gigapixels per second, which is 35% faster than last year’s SoC.

The upgraded ISP adds a computational HDR to 4K videos, with an improved low-light capture architecture, and the option to shoot photos in 10-bit color in HEIF. There are also improved burst capabilities, and it can capture up to 120 photos in a single second at a 10-megapixel resolution.

With such improved camera techniques, Smartphone manufacturers are left to build their own cameras that will carry these advanced and upgraded camera features. There are a series of Smartphone companies that will launch phones to be powered by this new processor, including ASUS ROG Phone, ZTE Nubia RedMagic Z series phone, OPPO, LG, OnePlus, Vivo and iQOO, Xiaomi.
