On Tuesday, the 30th of June, 2020, and electronic document released by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) of the United State of America said and I quote: “Today, the FCC’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau confirmed the FCC’s initial designation of Huawei and ZTE as national security threats, prohibiting the use of universal service funds to purchase, obtain, maintain, improve, modify, or otherwise support any equipment or services produced or provided by Huawei or ZTE”
Similar to the reason that the Indian Government had for placing a ban on about 59 China apps in India, the FCC is here saying that Hauwei and ZTE are threats to the communication network of the country and thus is a threat to their national security.
What this Means
Any US communication company seeking to buy an equipment that is produced by Huawei or ZTE will not receive any grant from the FCC $8.5 billion fun. This $8.5 billion FCC fun is the main way in which the US government is using to subsidize the acquisition of equipments by the US communication companies.
Without receiving this grant, many communication company will have to stop patronizing these 2 China’s tech giant.
Also, current equipment by Huawei and ZTE that are still active in the US communication network is set to be fished out and replaced. This move, will inevitably force both Huawei and ZTE out of the US.
Should I Throw Away my Huawei and ZTE gadget?
The decision to whether US citizens should throw away their Huawei or ZTE device is greatly dependent on the person’s funds.
As of now, the low funding available to FCC has forced them to decide that only equipments that poses a potential threat to the country’s communication infrastructure that will be fished out and replaced. And it is hard to phantom that a US citizen Huawei or ZTE device can pose such a threat.
So, you shouldn’t be expecting the government to come knock on your door one day, collect your Hauwei or ZTE device and hand you another one that is not produced by a Chinese company. Except of cause, if you are the number 1 citizen, or a very important person in the US defense or communication system.
Can Huawei and ZTE Really be Viewed as National Security Threats
No company will willingly want to constitute themselves as threat to the National security of a country they do business with, whether that country is theirs or not. However, because Huawei and ZTE are not natively US companies but originated from China, they are under the Chinese law.
So, if they are under obligation by the Chinese government to cooperate with their country’s intelligence services, then, they may unwittingly have to comply.
This is the reason why US Federal Communication Commission (FCC) is trying to kick out these 2 China companies out of USA.
However, Hauwei and ZTE have repeatedly refused the claims that they will cave in if such demand were made by their government.
