Not getting your emails on time can be devasting for some, especially if you regularly get important work emails. You need to fix it and fast. Sometimes the problem has an easy fix, but other times you need to try more time-consuming methods.
It’s always best to start off with the simple fixes since there are times that’s all it takes to get things up and running. For example, you’d be surprised the number of times a simple reboot of my Android device has fixed quite a few problems.
How to Fix Not Getting Gmail Notifications
Are you sure that it’s not just a notification problem? Maybe if you went to your inbox, you’d see all the emails you thought you weren’t getting. To check if your Gmail notifications are on your Android device:
- Open the Gmail app
- Tap on the lined menu at the top left
- Choose your account
Under the notifications section, your notifications should be set to All. Maybe you turned it off when you took those days off from work and disabled it and forgot to turn it back on.
If the notification settings are fine, swipe down some more, and under Data Usage, make sure that the Sync Gmail option is checked. If it’s not, tap on it, so the checkmark appears.
Another way to make sure you’re getting all the Gmail notifications is to go to:
- Apps & notification
- See all X apps
- Notifications (make sure it’s toggled on)
Low Storage Space Could Be Affecting Gmail Sync
Gmail needs to use your device’s storage to work, and when it’s full, things won’t work the way they should. There are various things you can do to fix not having enough storage space on Android.
For example, if you use Google Photo, you can have the app erase any pictures and videos that are already backed up. You can do this by going to Google Photos and in the Library tab, tap on the Utilities option. The free up space will be a few options down.
Erase Cache and Data for Gmail
It’s not common for this data to cause such issues, but it never hurts to clear it from time to time. You can do this by going to:
- Apps & notifications
- See all X apps
- Clear cache or Clear storage ( this second option will erase all the apps data, and you’ll even need to sign in again)
Other Things to Keep in Mind
If restarting your device didn’t work, have you checked to see if you added the email account to your device. If the email is new, maybe you thought you added it but didn’t. You can also try checking to see if Gmail is due for an update by tapping on the lined menu bay and tapping on My Apps & Games.
Any available updates will be seen in the Updates tab. If you don’t see any updates, tapping on the refresh option won’t hurt. Removing and then re-adding the account could also help. Also, if you had to turn on airplane mode for some reason, make sure it’s off. It’s easy to forget things when you’re in a hurry.
It can be very frustrating when someone you use regularly decides to take a break. Good thing that there are various fixes you can try to get things going again. How long has your email been giving you problems?
