If the issue persists, download and run Chrome Canary, a developer version of Chrome.
3. Disable extensions
- Open Chrome (non-incognito).
- In the address bar, type the code below then press Enter:
chrome://extensions
- Disable your privacy extension from the list of extensions.
- With the extension tab still open, open a new tab and log in to your Facebook account.
- Select Allow or Block from the popup message displayed on the upper left side of your screen.
- Refresh the Facebook page to check if the black screen overlay is gone
- Go back to the extensions tab.
- Enable the extensions one by one.
Some extensions installed on Google Chrome can bring about the Facebook black screen on Chrome issue.
To fix this, disable all extensions and check if the black screen disappears, in which case you can re-enable them by installing each at a go, or permanently remove them. Does this help? If not, try the next solution.
4. Disable Hardware Acceleration
- Open Google Chrome.
- Click the three dots at the top right of the window. When you hover over it, you’ll see Customize and control Google Chrome.
- Click Settings.
- Scroll down and click Advanced.
- Scroll down again to System, and drag the slider against the Use hardware acceleration when available to disable the setting.
- Close Chrome and restart to apply the changes.
Google Chrome uses Hardware Acceleration by default to deliver better performance, which, sometimes, may not augur well with your hardware, hence the Facebook black screen on Chrome issue.
Disabling hardware acceleration from the Chrome settings may fix the issue.
5. Reset Chrome settings
- Open Google Chrome.
- Click Settings.
- Scroll down and click Advanced.
- Go to Reset box.
- Click Reset and confirm by clicking Reset again.
You can restore Chrome browser settings at any time if apps or extensions changed your settings without your knowledge. This doesn’t delete, clear, or change your saved bookmarks and passwords.
When you reset Chrome settings, it changes the default search engine back to Google, changes your homepage and tabs, pinned tabs, content settings, cookies and site data, as well as extensions, back to default.
Note: only the settings for the logged-in Chrome profile will be reset, and the changes will apply across all computers or devices you’re signed into with your active profile.
6. Create a new user profile
- Exit Chrome.
- Open File Explorer.
- In the address bar, type this location:
%LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChromeUser Data
- Find the Default folder in the directory window.
- Rename it as Backup default.
- Open Chrome again. A new Default folder will be created automatically as you start using the browser
If you get the Facebook black screen on Chrome, chances are your user profile is corrupted. Create a new one and see if it makes any difference.
7. Remove unwanted ads, popups, and malware
- On the Chrome prompt, click Details
- Click Show files to be removed to see the actual suspicious files
- Click Remove
The steps mentioned above will show the files that need to be removed. If you didn’t see a prompt, do this:
- Open Chrome Cleanup Tool website
- Click Download now
- Read the terms of service and click Accept and Download
- Go to the file downloads folder and click:
chrome_cleanup_tool.exe
- Click Run to run the file
- The Chrome Cleanup Tool will scan your computer and show you a list of malware found
- Click Remove Suspicious Programs
- A new tab will open and Chrome will ask you to reset your settings. Click Reset
If you get a Facebook black screen on Chrome, you may have unwanted software or malware installed on your computer which usually takes the form of popup ads and new tabs that won’t disappear.
You might confront with a changing Chrome homepage or search engine, unwanted extensions or toolbars that keep coming back, your browser is hijacked and keeps redirecting to unfamiliar pages or ads.
If Chrome wants to remove the unwanted programs, click Remove, and it will do it for you, then set some settings to default and turn off extensions. Restart your computer after doing this.
Note: to turn extensions you trust back on, click More, select More Tools, then Extensions, click Check the box next to Enabled.
8. Disable Chrome Flags
- Open Chrome.
- Type the line below in the URL bar:
chrome://flags
- Find these flags: GPU compositing on all pages and Threaded.
- Compositing, Do SHOW Presents with GD, and disable them.
- Relaunch Chrome and check if the problem goes away.
9. Change default graphic processor
You can also try and change the default graphic processor from Intel to NVidia or AMD dedicated processor by right-clicking the context menu, or from NVidia and AMD Control Panels.
Many users who reported that “Facebook causes my screen to go black” have used this method to get rid of the problem and it worked like a charm.
10. Change Chrome setting via Facebook
- Sign in to your Facebook account.
- Go to Settings.
- Click Notifications in the left pane
- Click Desktop and Mobile under Notification Settings.
- Find the option under Desktop for Chrome: See your notifications in the corner of your computer screen, even when Facebook is closed.
- Turn it on and off. Remember to re-enable your extensions again and see if the black screen disappears.
