Google Photos to end free unlimited backup starting from June 2021

Pixels phones aren’t exempted from Google’s upcoming money eating schemes. Starting from the month of June 2021, Google says it will end the iconic free unlimited photo backups.

Google Pixels phones selling points was the free original-quality photo storage, which comes without compressing that is applied to most uploads in order to offer free storage.

But today, Google is changing that, where previous Pixel phones could still upload those photos for free after Google axes unlimited storage on June 1st, 2021, Google confirmed that any future Pixels you buy will not come with those free uploads and last to come with free unlimited “high-quality” uploads to Google Photos.

Probably, this has been in the ultimate plans of Google, we’ve expected these changes for a long time, and Google has made it official. Google sent emails to all its users concerning the new storage policy and it reads:

  • Starting June 1, 2021, all new photos and videos backed up in High quality will count toward the free 15 GB of storage that comes with your Google Account or any additional storage you may have purchased, the same way other Google services like Google Drive and Gmail already do.
  • All photos and videos you back up in High quality before June 1, 2021, are exempt from this change and will not count toward your Google Account storage. This includes all of your existing content uploaded in High quality.

Five years ago, Google introduced a new photo storage service known as Google Photos. It mainly served as a Photo Gallery to manage your photos, but unlike others, you have the option to backup all your photos and videos online.

During the years, Google has exempted it from the free 15GB of storage that comes with your Google Account. But starting from the 1st of June, 2021, all photos backed up in High quality will start counting towards it.

In the email, Google said, “Google Photos is the home for more than 4 trillion photos and videos, including yours, and a remarkable 28 billion new photos and videos are uploaded every week.”

Unarguably, Google Photos is “a place you go when you feel nostalgic and want to reminisce.” Definitely, photos are a world of its own, it saves all your photos memories starting from when you ticked the backup option.

The search engine giant made it clear that these changes will become effective from June 1, 2021, and any existing and already backed up high-quality photos and videos are exempted from the change and will not count toward your Google Account storage.

As of this time, Google isn’t asking you to do anything about the changes, and promised to provide some photo expertise that will allow you to find out unwanted images and delete them, such as blurry photos and others.
