If you’re one of the many people that has ever written an email, checked it over, then clicked send just as you notice that you’ve made a mistake, then you’re not alone. This sort of mistake is frustratingly common and easy to do. It typically results in you having to send a follow-up email straight away, hoping that no-one responds in the meantime.
One of Gmail’s more underrated features is an “Undo Send” option. This option helps out in situations like that where you hit send by accident. By default, Google gives you a five-second window to cancel sending an email, but you can increase that up to 30 seconds if you want.
Email recall features do exist in other email platforms, but they are highly unreliable at best, as users have to choose to accept the recall, which usually draws their attention to the email with the mistake. Gmail’s solution is actually reliable however, it achieves this by just delaying sending the email until the timer has expired.
Tip: You should be aware of the time delay if you’re sending time-sensitive emails as it could cause you to miss hard deadlines if you leave sending emails to the last second.
To configure the send cancellation period, you need to go into Gmail’s settings. To do so, click on the cogwheel icon in the top-right corner, then click “See all settings”.
In the “General” tab of the settings, find the “Undo Send” section, then select your preferred time period from the drop-down, menu. your options to choose from are 5, 10, 20, and 30 seconds. Once you’ve made your choice, scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Save Changes”.
To undo sending an email, click “Undo” in the bottom-left corner just after you’ve sent an email.
