I’ve just upgraded my camera and have tried to connect it to my Windows 10 PC using the supplied USB cable. When I turn the camera on, Windows sends a message to say that the last item connected by USB is not recognized???HelP….please. I have Nikon software on my PC, but it doesn’t seem to be a Software issue, it appears to be a Windows issue.
If you also have issues with your camera, here is how to fix the Nikon camera not connecting to a computer issue.
What can I do if my PC doesn’t recognize my Nikon camera?
1. Basic checks to perform
Before taking any other measures, follow these steps to perform basic checks:
- Check if the USB cable is promptly inserted at both ends.
- Try connecting the USB cable to a different port.
- Make sure you don’t use the USB Hub to connect and directly connect to the PC’s USB port.
- If the issue persists, for the time being, you can transfer the photos using the more traditional card reader option.
- All the laptops come with a memory card reader.

2. Check the AutoPlay settings
- Click on Start and select Settings.
- Click on Devices.
- From the left pane, click on AutoPlay.
- For Removable Driver, click the drop-down menu and make sure it is set to Ask me every time.
- Remove and connect your camera to the computer again.
- Check for any improvements.
The AutoPlay feature allows you to customize the actions the computer can take after connecting an external device. If the option is set to No Action, the computer may not recognize the camera.

- Go to Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click on your camera software and select Uninstall.
- Next, insert the CD ROM for the firmware and install the software.
- If you don’t have the CD, you can download the software from the official Nikon website.
- Restart the computer and check for any improvements.
Note: The Nikon DSLR cameras come bundled with a firmware CD in the box, including their firmware drivers.
Use a third-party driver updater
If you want to make sure you always have the latest compatible version of your drivers installed, you should use a third-party tool that does it automatically for you.
You won’t need to worry about installing outdated drivers or incompatible versions. A few clicks is all you need, then your hardware and firmare will be scanned automatically.
