FIX: Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework error 256

1. Update Intel and system drivers

2. Check Windows Services startup type

  1. Press the Windows key + R to open Run.
  2. Type services and click OK to open the Services window.
  3. In the Services window, look for the following services and make sure they are set to default as follows:
    Connected Device Platforms Services – Automatic 
    Connected Devices Platforms User Service Telemetry – Automatic 
    Network Connection Broker – Manual 
  4. To change the startup type, right-click on the service, choose Properties and start Startup type to Automatic/Manual as shown above.
  5. Click Apply and OK to save the changes.
  6. Do this for all the services listed above and close the Windows service window.
  7. Reboot your computer and check if the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework error 256 is resolved.

3. Run a battery test 

Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework is a power and thermal management solution. The driver associated with the device is designed to resolve fan noise, overheating and performance-related issues of the system.

If updating your battery did not resolve the error, diagnose the battery for issues. You can perform a battery performance test using OEM’s proprietary software.

Lenovo users can use Lenovo Vantage, while HP offers its Assistance software to evaluate your battery health. You may have to replace your battery if it has reached its end of life.


4. Rollback driver update 

  1. Press the Windows key + R to open Run.
  2. Type devmgmt.msc and click OK to open Device Manager.

  3. In Device Manager, expand the System Devices section.
  4. Right-click on Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Manager and choose Properties
  5. Open the Driver tab.
  6. Click the Roll Back Driver button. Click Yes to confirm the action.
  7. Once the driver rollback is complete, reboot the computer and check for any improvements.

If the Roll Back Driver option is greyed out, then you may have to install an older version of the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Manager manually.

To download the driver, go to your laptop OEM’s download page and search for the driver. Run the installer and click Yes if asked to confirm installing the older version of an existing driver.


5. Update BIOS

  1. Visit your laptop manufacturer website and go to the Download center. You may have to enter your model number and other details.
  2. From the download center, check if you have a BIOS update available. 
  3. Download the executable BIOS file and run it as per the instructions of your OEM.
