Facebook Messenger Secret Chats Will Soon be Backupable

Facebook is working on a new secure storage feature for end-to-end encrypted chats on Messenger. Secret messages history on Messenger can now be back-up in case a user loses their smartphone or reinstalls the app on their device.

As posted by Facebook in a blog post, the company revealed they have plans to test the secure storage feature for end-to-end encrypted chats on Messenger that makes it possible for users to backup and restore their encrypted chats.

The end-to-end encrypted chats on Messenger will remain accessible only to the users, however, Facebook can only access it when a user reports the chat for review.

Facebook revealed there are several ways to store their end-to-end encrypted chats on Messenger. It can be through the default way, which is secure storage, a security pin / a code, or via third-party cloud services, like Google Drive.

The new secure storage feature for end-to-end encrypted chats will be coming to Android and iOS only, so the web and desktop versions of Facebook Messenger will not get this feature. Furthermore, the backup chat history will only be available for chats that are end-to-end encrypted.

In conclusion, Facebook said, “We will continue to provide updates as we make progress toward the global rollout of default end-to-end encryption for personal messages and calls in 2023.”.
